Smoke over the Maritimes

Smoke from wildfires burning in Saskatchewan drifted across the Canadian Maritimes in July, 2015. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite captured this true-color image on July 11.

The thickest arc of smoke snakes over New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. A thinner veil of smoke stretches across Maine, New York and reaches southward to Massachusetts. The early fire season in western Canada and the United States has been intense, leading to large amounts of smoke aloft at high altitudes traveling long distances and affecting air quality hundreds of kilometers from the source.
