Spring snow across northern New England

A quick blast of frigid air moved across New England on April 26, 2016, dropping two to four inches of snow from Burlington, Vermont to Portland, Maine and dusting upstate New York in white. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Terra satellite captured this true-color image on April 27 - a clear, sunny day ideal for viewing the aftermath of the storm from space.

Upstate New York lies in the west of the image. The long Lake Champlain separates New York from Vermont. Burlington, Vermont is located on the eastern shore of the lake, just below center. To the east of Vermont, snow crosses New Hampshire before it reaches Maine. Portland, Maine, lies on the southeast coast of that state, just southeast of the nearly-round Sebago Lake.
