Dust over the Gulf of Oman

Strong winds pushed a broad veil of dust across the Gulf of Oman in late February 2019. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the dusty scene on February 21.

The dust originates in Iran, north of the Gulf of Oman, and blows generally southward. While the blowing dust appears tan and obscures the view of the blue waters below, the clear air ahead of the plume allows a crisp, clear view of both the Gulf of Oman and the brown-and-tan land of northern Oman. Dust storms are one of the most common natural hazards in this region.
