On September 13, 2020, the skies were clear over a wide expanse of Europe, allowing the Moderate Resolution imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite to acquire a stunning true-color image that stretched more than 1,100 miles (1,770 km), from the English Channel to the middle of the Adriatic Sea.
While the sunny day allowed excellent imagery, the news wasn’t so good for most of Europe, which has been suffering under an exceptional heatwave since July—and seems to be destined to end the summer with a sizzle. According to MeteoFrance, temperatures on September 14 and 15 are expected to reach 34-36˚C (93-97˚F), which is far above average for mid-September. The United Kingdom’s Met Office also warned of temperatures reaching 29-30˚C (84-86˚F) in the southeast by mid-week, which, although milder than France, are still about 20˚F higher than normal during this period.
