A few popcorn clouds hung over the western portion of the island of Cuba on November 25, 2021, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image. The nearly-clear skies allowed a view of the gray pixels on the north coast that mark city of Havana, the capital of the country and its primary port. Also visible are the Isla de Juventud (Isle of Youth) and the spectacular milky-blue waters of the Gulf of Batabano.
The Island of Juventud is a very large island and a popular tourist destination, rich in historical and ecological sites, as well as tourist pleasures such as snorkeling, diving, sandy beaches and some hotel amenities. It sits on the southwestern edge of the Gulf of Batabano, whose striking colors are created by coral reefs and sediments washed up from the shallow floor of the basin. The Gulf is also known for its harvest of sponges and as a rich fishery.
