On September 27, 2024, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image of dust sweeping across Chad.
The cream-colored plumes of dust appear to rise from the Bodele Depression and then are carried to the southwest by strong winds. The Bodele Depression sits south of the Tibesti Mountains and east of the Ennedi Mountains. As winds are squeezed through the gap between these ranges, they pick up speed, making it easier to kick up dust and sand. As a result, dust storms are frequent occurrences in this region.
