The Opto-Mechanical System is a design scheme that maximized
the modularity of the MODIS instrument to permit parallel
fabrication, construction, and testing of the principal components
(Mainframe, Scan Mirror, Passive Radiative Cooler, Optical
Bench, and the Door Assemblies).
Technical Description
The modular construction of the instrument allowed the most
efficient system integration and testing at the same time
that it guaranteed that each sub-assembly met system requirements
before being integrated into a cohesive instrument. This design
system allowed MODIS scientists and engineers to ensure that
MODIS was using the most efficient design before it being
launched into orbit, where it would be too late to change
anything.
