Fires in Southeastern Africa

Smoke from fires burning in southeastern Africa flowed westwards towards the ocean when the MODIS on the Aqua satellite captured this image on September 1, 2008. The hundreds, possibly thousands of fires are in (clockwise): Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland, South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia. Places where the MODIS detected actively burning fires are marked with red dots.

September is near the end of southern Africa’s dry season, and intentional agricultural fires as well as accidental forest fires are common. According to BBC news, at least 20 people had been killed by out-of-control fires in South Africa as of September 2.

All the fires created a river of smoke over the Atlantic. The MODIS on the Terra satellite captured this image, also on September 1.
