Fires in Indochina

Hundreds of fires, likely due to land-use burning, were scattered across Indochina on February 9, 2009, when the MODIS on the Aqua satellite captured this image. Each fire detected by MODIS is marked with a red dot. Some smoke is visible over the region too, blowing southwest over the Gulf of Thailand.

In the upper left corner of the image is Thailand. At image center is Cambodia. In the top right corner is Laos, and in the lower right corner is Vietnam. Near the left center of the image, on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand, you can just make out the city of Bankok underneath the smoke. It looks like a grayish patch. In Cambodia, the Tonlé Sap Lake appears brownish green. The river running southward through Cambodia and emptying into the South China Sea is the Mekong River.
