The Great Lakes Region

This view of the Great Lakes region was captured on September 1, 2009 by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite. The largest group of freshwater lakes on the planet, the sit on the border of the United States and Canada. They include, from west to east: Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario.

The blue/green coloration in several of the lakes is likely due to the calcium carbonate (or chalk) in the water. The amount of it changes seasonally, and when there are increased amounts, it colors the water. Read these Earth Observatory articles on Lake Michigan and Lake Erie for more information.
