November 11, 2009 - Fires and Smoke in Northern India
Agricultural fires continued to burn in northern India in this image, captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on November 3, 2009. The fires, each marked in red, are clustered near the Himalayan Mountains. Smoke from the fires, which is quite thick in India, spreads southwest over Pakistan and the Arabian Sea. The smoke is a dirty brownish gray; some white cloud cover is also visible.
Brown sediment from the Narmada and Tapti rivers drains into the Gulf of Khambhat. The Kathiawar Pennisula separates this body of water from the Gulf of Kutch to the northwest. North of the Gulf of Kutch is the Rann of Kutch - a saline clay desert, which can fill with water during the monsoon season. Afghanistan is visible in the top left corner of the image.
