Ambrym Volcano

The MODIS on the Terra satellite caught this image of the Ambrym Volcano on December 3, 2009. The volcano is emitting a thin plume of gas, likely rich in sulfur dioxide. Ambrym is one of the most active volcanoes in the Vanuatu archipelago. Vanuatu is located west of Fiji, southeast of the Solomon Islands, near New Guinea. It is 1,750 km east of northern Australia.

In October, Ambrym was emitting sulfur dioxide gas, creating volcanic fog (or vog) over the region.
