Cloud Vortices off the Juan Fernandez Islands

The clouds over the Juan Fernandez Islands formed into vortices on January 20, 2010. The MODIS on the Aqua satellite captured this image on the same day. Turbulence, caused by the wind passing over the highest point of each island, is producing the pronounced eddies that swirl the clouds into this pattern.

The Juan Fernandez Islands are a small grouping about 400 miles off the coast of Chile in South America.
