Tinakula Volcano

This image, captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on May 25, 2010, shows an ash plume from the Tinakula Volcano. There are several islands hidden amongst the clouds in this scene. Tinakula is in the top left quadrant - the volcano itself is mostly obscured, but it has a visible plume that blows to the right, which is grayer and more diffuse than the clouds around it.

Tinakula Volcano is at the north end of the Santa Cruz islands, which is part of the Temotu Province of the Solomon Islands, which lie in the South Pacific Ocean. To the south of Tinakula is Nendo, the largest of the Santa Cruz islands.
