Fires in Northwest Territories, Canada

Several fires burned in Canada's Northwest Territories on June 11, 2010. The MODIS on the Aqua satellite captured this image on the same day. The fires are marked by red dots, but they also have gray smoke plumes.

The body of water you see in the image is Great Slave Lake. This lake is just a little further north than Northwest Territories' border with Alberta. To the north (and out of frame) is another lake, Great Bear. Though Great Bear Lake is larger, Great Slave Lake is actually the deepest lake in North America. As you can see from the image, the eastern arm of the lake is filled with islands.
