July 18, 2010 - Dust Storm Over Iraq

Dust Storm Over Iraq

Streamers of dust blew over Iraq and Kuwait towards the Persian Gulf, in this image, captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite July 2, 2010. The dust is interestingly multi-colored - a pale plume of dust seems to come from inland. A slightly darker tan plume of dust appears to come from nearer to the shores of the Persian Gulf, and a still darker stream of dust comes from what appears to be a more populated area. If you look at the higher resolution images, you can make out the lines the usually mean human settlement. There are several cities in this region.

To the left of this dark plume you can just make out the Euphrates River. More visible (and slightly to the north of the Euphrates) is the Tigris River. The city of Baghdad is on the Tigris, and may be visible in the higher resolution images. It's located near the top left corner of the image. The red dot is near it. (The two red dots are the locations of active fires.)
