The Butts Fire ignited on July 1 at 12:08 p.m. local time (19:08 UTC) about three miles north of Pope Valley in Northern California. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image at 2:25 p.m. local time (21:25 UTC), just over two hours after the fire was first reported.
According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE), as of the morning of July 9, 4,300 acres of land have been burnt and the fire is 95% contained. Two residences and seven outbuildings have been destroyed and four injuries reported. A total of 118 personnel continue working the blaze, primarily in mopping up and patrolling the perimeter.
The cause of the Butts Fire is under investigation. CAL FIRE cautions that with current weather conditions the fire danger remains elevated in the state. Everyone is urged to use extreme caution to eliminate sparks, which can easily ignite large fires.
