Fires in northern Canada

Fires continued to blaze across Canada’s Northern Territories in late August, 2014. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on August 24.

Intense fire activity can be seen north, west and south of the Great Slave Lake. Red hotspots mark areas where the thermal sensor on the MODIS instrument detected high temperatures. Heavy smoke pours from most of these hotspots and in some areas the smoke is extremely dense. When hotspots are combined with smoke, it marks actively burning fire.

According to the Northwest Territories fire update for September 8, there have been 385 fires in 2014 which have burnt 3,387,603.58 hectares.
