Fires and smoke in northern India

Although the numbers of agricultural fires appear diminished in mid-November, 2014, heavy smoke continued to pour across northern India.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on November 17 as it flew over the region. Red hotspots, each marking an area where the thermal bands on the instrument detected high temperatures indicative of fires, speckle northern India, with the largest cluster near the border of Pakistan. Heavy smoke hangs over the entire region south of the snow-capped Himalayan Mountains, and a thick river of smoke flows from the northwestern fires along the face of the mountains, over Bangladesh and the Bay of Bengal.
