Smoke and fires in northern India

A few agricultural fires continued to burn in northwestern India and northern Pakistan in late November, 2014, contributing to the smoky pall hanging over the landscape. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on November 22.

Rice paddies and wheat and vegetable fields are commonly cleared with fire in the Punjab in October and November, and smoke from such fires create a health hazard in their own right – but also are an important source of the haze that often hangs over this region . Other factors include the routine urban and industrial pollution from cities in northern India.
