Ice, snow, and fires in eastern Siberia

Russia has had its share of fires in recent months. Agriculture fires in April escape their handlers and spread quickly and dangerously leaving 29 dead and at least 6,000 residents homeless. This image, however, shows just a smattering of fires mostly in the Zavitinsky region of Russia and few west of Lake Baikal in the Bauntovsky Evenkiysky District. These are, again, most probably agricultural in nature. There are no current reports of wildfires in Siberia, although that, too, is always a possibility.

In this image, fire is not center stage; the most elevations. Snow caps the mountains around the northern part of Lake Baikal eastward.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image on May 10, 2015.

striking feature is the snow and ice still present all across the northern part of this image in the higher
