May 31, 2016 - Dust plume over the eastern Mediterranean Sea

In late May 2016 strong winds carried a stream of dust across Egypt's Nile River Delta and over the Mediterranean Sea. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on May 26.
The dust likely originated in the Western Desert, which covers about 262,800 sq. mi (680,650 sq. km), or about two-thirds of the land surface of Egypt and is a frequent source of dust in this region. The plume spans hundreds of kilometers, originating south of the Nile Delta, crossing Cairo and Port Said before crossing the Mediterranean and thinning south of Cyprus and over Lebanon.
