Tropical Storm Eliakim over Madagascar

Tropical Cyclone Eliakim made landfall on the Masoala peninsula of Madagascar at 6:00 UTC (2:00 a.m. EDT) on March 16, 2018, bringing average wind speeds of 100 km/h (62.4 mph) to the island’s northeastern tip during much of the day. Gusts have been measured as high as 140 km/h (90 mph).

The storm is expected to move south over central Madagascar as it weakens. The storm center may pass over the coast on March 19 and track away from land. Heavy rain, storm surges, and strong winds may affect northern, central and southern Madagascar as well as La Reunion through at least March 20.

On March 15, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Tropical Storm Eliakim as it approached Madagascar. The broad storm had heavy clouds circulating around a wide center at the time the image was acquired.
