Dust storm in the Gobi Desert

Dust storms continued to blow across the Gobi Desert through mid-April 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the storm on April 14.

Camel-colored dust swirls along an arc that begins in Mongolia, swirls generally southward, then recurves northward. Banks of cloud suggest a storm system that generated strong, sustained winds that lifted massive amounts of sand into the atmosphere. Dust storms are the primary natural hazard of the region. They can occur at any time of the year but are most common in March and April.
