Dust over the Red Sea

A strong weather front swept across parts of the Middle East in mid-January 2019, driving a broad band of dust across the Red Sea. Storms, carrying hail, rain, and snow, were reported in Syria, Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, and Lebanon, while strong wind whipped dust and sand across parts of Egypt, the Red Sea, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia from January 16-17.

On January 17, 2019, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of dust blowing across Egypt, the Red Sea, and Saudi Arabia. Clouds along the northern section of the image are likely a part of the strong storm system which drives the dust.
