March 20, 2019 - Yangtze River Delta

Yangtze River Delta

A heavy load of sediment poured from the Yangtze River in mid-March, 2019, coloring the waters of the East China Sea a muddy brown near the outflow of the river’s delta. As sediment sinks, the reflectivity changes often giving the water a greenish hue. Streaks of sediment stretched more than 100 miles (161 km) away from China’s shores.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s acquired this true-color image of the heavily populated, muddy-appearing Yangtze River Delta on March 13, 2019.
