Snow in the Andes

Snowstorms in Chile and Argentina dropped a blanket of white over parts of the Andes Mountains in May, 2019, fueling hopes of an early ski season. Ski resorts typically open in mid-June in most of the Andes but many begin to welcome guests when snow becomes adequate. Antillanca, near Santiago, Chile, reported 5.1 inches (13 cm) on May 19 and, just further south, Alto del Padre reported 6.7 in (17 in) on May 21.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of snow in the Andes on May 23, 2019.

Heavy snow blankets the Andes starting just north of Santiago, Chile and stretches to the south and east. Santiago appears as a smudge of gray pixels in tan mountainous land west of the snowline. The border between Chile (west) and Argentina (east) runs through the peaks of the Andes. In the southeast, Chile’s broad coastal plain and the South Pacific Ocean is covered by a large bank of low cloud (fog).
