Jens Redemann
Bay Area Environmental Research Institute

Biography:
Since 1997, Jens has been involved in the comparison and synergy of suborbital and satellite aerosol data sets. While his immediate knowledge is with the deployment of aerosol remote sensing instrumentation on suborbital platforms, he has recently focused more on the analysis of aerosol data sets from satellite sensors. In that context, he has led the Extended MODIS-l Validation Experiment (EVE, 2004) out of Monterey in April of 2004, which was focused on the validation of MODIS-derived aerosol optical depth (AOD) at wavelengths beyond 1µm. Jens is also involved in a project that attempts to validate the MODIS-derived aerosol fine mode fraction (FMF) using field experiment data gathered in the ACE-Asia campaign.

Research Area:
The data gathered by the NASA AATS (Ames Airborne Tracking Sunphotometer) instruments have been used extensively in the validation of satellite sensors. To date AATS data have contributed to validating aerosol and O3 retrievals from 11 different satellite sensors including AVHRR, ATSR-2, GMS-5, GOES-8, GOME, MISR, MODIS, POAM, SAGE 3, SeaWiFS and TOMS and have led to revisions of retrieval algorithms for MISR and MODIS. The focus of our current project is the spatial variability of MODIS derived aerosol data products, with emphasis on the separation of cloud and aerosol fields.
