Abstract
The unsupervised land cover classification method was applied on the monthly composite data obtained by Terra/MODIS sensor from December 2002 to November 2003 over the Kanto district, Japan, and was examined on the combination in effective bands and observation periods for the land cover classification. First, the combination in effective bands was determined for the classification on the point of the separability among classes. And, the optimum observation periods for the classification were selected. In addition, by combining the effective bands and optimum observation periods, the land cover classification was carried out, and the classification accuracy was examined. The degradation of classification accuracy was observed when all periods were involved. And, the comparatively good result was observed when the classification was conducted by selecting appropriate bands and periods. This result suggests that it is indispensable for the land cover classification to combine appropriate bands and periods. The accuracy of classification in using Terra/MODIS data was also examined comparatively with a supervised and decision tree classification.
