Abstract
The paper presents a short survey of directions in research to design vegetation indices: perpendicular and, to a large extent, ratio indices. Ratio indices are analysed for different ecosystems. The results of this analysis demonstrate the potential for the application of vegetation indices, from the point of view of the contrast and information content of images processed using the main indices.
