Abstract
In view of the recent interruption of Envisat services, the European Space Agency (ESA) started the backlog processing of the whole archive of Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS), through the Culture-MERIS project. Culture-MERIS provides global weekly composites of MERIS full-resolution (300 m) land reflectance. This paper examines the geographic coverage of the weekly product during the first year (2011) of operations. Pixel samples of weekly bottom-of-atmosphere (BOA) reflectance obtained from Culture-MERIS are compared with samples acquired from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra 500 m 8-day surface reflectance product (MOD09A1). The inter-comparison proved a reasonable agreement of the green and red bands, between the two products, apart from surface reflectances over forested lands, where the reflectance levels are low and approach the root mean square deviation (RMSD).
