Dust storms are shown sweeping over Iraq in this image, captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on Tuesday, February 19, 2008. Earlier in the week, a winter storm swept through Turkey and the Caucasus to the Caspian Sea. According to AccuWeather, this storm brought high winds from the west on Monday and Tuesday, causing sand storms in Iraq and its neighboring countries. The sand likely came from the Syrian Desert, which is in parts of Syria, Jordan, and Iraq. The dust storms were most widespread and severe in Iraq.
In this image, Iraq is the center with Syria in the top left corner, Jordan in the left center, and Saudi Arabia in the left lower corner. Iran is in the top right.
Although Kuwait isn't visible in this image (it would be to the lower right), it also experienced severe dust storms on Tuesday, with winds up to 25 mph. According to Terra Daily, Kuwait has had very little rain this winter, making the desert sand loose and easily carried by strong northwesterly winds.
