Dust blew out over the Persian Gulf in this image, captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on March 4, 2008. Streamers of pale dust are visible over Saudi Arabia (lower left), Kuwait (center), Iraq (top middle), and Iran (top right).
Dust storms are common on the Arabian Peninsua - Saudi Arabia is 95 percent desert. Rub’ Al Khali, the biggest desert in the Arabian Peninsula and one of the largest sand deserts in the world, occupies southern Saudi Arabia. Closer to the borders with Iraq and Kuwait is the An-Nafud Desert, whose sand dunes often exceed a height of 30 meters (100 feet). Some of the sand in northern Saudi Arabia looks like it may be coming from the An-Nafud Desert.
