Sediment off the Coast of Washington

This image of the US Pacific Northwest was captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on January 17, 2009. British Columbia, Canada is at the top of the image with Washington and Oregon to the south. Snow in December and a combination of rain and snowmelt in January caused flooding in many places in this region, especially in Washington. Flooding caused the rivers, like the Chehalis (top) and Columbia (bottom), to swell. Both of these rivers are releasing plumes of sediment into the Pacific Ocean. The rivers, normally blueish-green, appear brown with muddy run-off.

In December 2007, flooding caused a similar phenomena - Earth Observatory compares the flooded rivers with a pre-flood image here.
