Bushfires around Melbourne, Australia

Firefighters in Victoria were still working around the clock on February 16, 2009, to protect lives, property, and the catchment areas for the city of Melbourne’s water supply from devastating bushfires that had killed more than 180 people, according to news reports.

This image of the area northeast of Melbourne was captured by the MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite on the same day. Places where the sensor detected active fires are marked in red. Active fire locations were scattered across the rugged terrain of the Great Dividing Range Mountains. The Great Dividing Range Mountains are on the right side of the image and appear dark brown in contrast to the tan-colored land around the range. If you view the image in higher resolution, you might be able to pick out the Upper Yarra Reservoir just east of the line of fires in the mountains. The town of Marysville, which lost at least 39 people to the fires is obscured by smoke, but is located just west of the largest plume of smoke, at the edge of the Great Dividing Range. Melbourne itself is located on the northeastern shores of the Port Philip Bay, located roughly near image center.
