A large number of fires in both Alaska and the Yukon Territory are visible in this image, captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on August 3, 2009. Places where MODIS detected active fire are outlined in red, though the smoke plumes make it fairly easy to spot the locations of the fires.
Thick smoke obscures the ground in this region, and also appears to be drifting northwards. In combination with fires in Russia's Far East, the Arctic is veiled with haze.
