Fires in Western Russia

Fires were burning along the Volga River in early July 2010 when the MODIS on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image on July 1, 2010. Red dots indicate the locations of the fires, which are also marked by thick plumes of smoke blowing to the southwest.

Farther away from the flames, thin wisps of smoke, blown by the winds, are visible. The fires burn in a marshy area along the Volga. Vegetation, appearing in varied shades of green, carpets the area.
