Typhoon Kompasu (08W) approaching Korea

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this natural-color image of Typhoon Kompasu approaching the Korean peninsula and China from the East China Sea at 1:50 p.m. local time on September 1, 2010. The category 2 typhoon had sustained winds of 95 miles per hour at the time.

At 06:00 UTC on September 1, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported that Kompasu was centered near 32.3 degrees North latitude, 124.7 degrees West longitude, moving northeast toward Seoul, South Korea. The storm made landfall on the Korean peninsula early on September 2.
