Fires in Paraguay and Argentina

Many dozens of fires were burning across Argentina and Paraguay when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the region on May 10, 2020. Strong winds blow smoke plumes from many of the fires to the southwest.

Given the location, the large numbers of fires, and the time of year, most of these files are likely agricultural in origin—deliberately ignited to clear new land for pasture or crops, to renew pasture, or to prepare crops for planting. In recent years, clearing of forest in Gran Chaco has expanded as profitability of cattle and soybean sales, both domestically and internationally, have increased.
