March 28, 2021 - Soft Spring Day across Europe

Sea ice off of Newfoundland and Labrador

Sunshine highlighted a soft spring day across Europe on March 24, 2021. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of gorgeous scene on that same day.

The image stretches from the Netherlands in the north to northeastern Spain and mid-Italy in the south, a span of about 1,400 km (870 miles). While snow caps the Alps (east) and the Pyrenees Mountains (west), most of the landscape is colored in various shades of green. Forests are shaded in deep green, woodlands and grassland typically appear a brighter green. Agricultural land, which lies fallow much of the winter, is tinted a light green with tan undertones. This is especially visible in Italy’s Po Valley and the rich agricultural lands around Reims, France. Clouds hang over part of Germany and the Czech Republic in the northeast and east. Spotty cloud dots the air over the English Channel and covers Great Britain, in the northwest. Clumps of low cloud (fog) are scattered over many areas near the coast in France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
