On September 14, 2024, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of a sweeping system dumping rain across Central Europe. The clouds stretch from France, in the west to the Black Sea, in the east and from Finland in the north to Greece in the south.
The rain from the intense storm, which has been named Storm Boris, has triggered devastating and deadly flooding across the region. Media reports state that there have been at least twelve deaths in Romania, two in Poland, three in Austria, and one in the Czech Republic as of September 17.
According to the Washington Post, the weekend storm dropped record rainfall and up to 10 feet of mountain snow. With temperatures high across the region, melting snow and runoff is expected to increase flooding in lower-lying regions.
