A cold snap combined with fresh snow to bring the first taste of winter to parts of the United Kingdom on November 19, 2024. By mid-day, chilly temperatures had settled in Scotland, where media reported a brisk 11.2°C (52°F) in Braemar, Aberdeenshire. This was the coldest early winter temperature recorded in that location since 1998. That same day, the Met Office was quoted as reporting that 12 centimeter (4.7 inches) of new snow had fallen at Watnall, Nottinghamshire, England. The Arctic air and incoming snow caused icy roads in some areas, prompting school closures and delays or cancellation of train services.
But this “first taste” was truly just an appetizer for harsher weather to come. The November 19 winter-opener was followed by the approach of Storm Bert, a strong cyclonic storm spinning over the North Atlantic Ocean northwest of the United Kingdom. By November 22, the “multi-hazard weather event” had fully impacted the United Kingdom and Ireland with howling winds, rain, snow, and floods. Weather warnings and 13 flood alerts were raised across the United Kingdom, and heavy snow caused numerous flight delays.
By November 23, the storm remained in full swing. A death in England was attributed to Storm Bert, while five adults and five children were rescued from a house involved in a landslide in Wales, according to media reports. Ireland's meteorological service placed a "status red" rain warning — its highest level — for the counties of Cork and Galway as flooding in the western coast region made roads impassable. Meanwhile, blizzard conditions were reported in Yorkshire and northeast England.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a false-color image of early winter snowfall on November 20. In this type of image, ice and snow appear electric blue, vegetation looks bright green, and deep water show up as dark blue. Clouds often appear white but high, cold clouds that contain ice crystals also have an electric blue tint. In this image, it's clear that snow overlies the vegetation in Wales (west) and much of England. The city of Manchester, England is marked by a dark center surrounded by tan and half-way surrounded by an arc of snow.
The foul winter weather whipping Ireland and the United Kingdom is expected to wind down over November 24 and move away from the region shortly afterwards.
