Pacific Northwest

Lush forests, stunning coastlines, and magnificent mountains are the primary natural features of the part of North American known as the Pacific Northwest. Although there are no firm boundaries, this region stretches from the Pacific Coast to the Rocky Mountains and includes parts of Canada as well as the United States. The states of Oregon, Washington, and Idaho as well as the province of British Columbia are all included.

On April 16, 2025, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image of springtime in the Pacific Northwest.

The boundary between the United States (south) and Canada (north) runs between oval-shaped Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state. Snow tops the Olympic National Park and much of Olympic National Forest. The boundary then sweeps north, between Orcas Island and Vancouver Island, then takes a sharp turn eastward.

The city of Vancouver, British Columbia along with the mud-tinted Fraser River are located north of the border. Sediment from the Fraser River has spilled into the Strait of Georgia, creating a tan plume just off the coast of Vancouver. The greenish-gray pixels that mark human habitation begin at Vancouver and continue southward, ultimately reaching Bellingham, Washington just south of the border.
