Danube River Delta

On June 16, 2025, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this glorious true-color image of the Danube Delta, the green and labyrinthine spot where the Danube River spills into the Black Sea. The emerald wetlands contrast with the surrounding golden-toned agricultural plains.

The spectacularly biodiverse Danube Delta is shared between Romania and Ukraine, but its reach is far beyond just those two countries. The Delta has been built by the action of the Danube River—a river that rises in the Black Forest mountains of Germany then rolls through ten additional countries. The watershed, which spans more than 300,000 square miles (800,000 square kilometers), receives water from nineteen countries. Sometimes called the “Everglades of Europe”, the Danube Delta supports more than 300 species of birds and 45 species of freshwater fish.
