Yellowstone

The first snow of the season was beginning to accumulate on the mountain peaks of Yellowstone National Park in mid-November 2025. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image centered on Yellowstone Lake and the surrounding snow-capped Rocky Mountains on November 13.

Yellowstone National Park was first established in 1872, making it the first national park in the United States, and probably in the world. The park, which spans 3,468 square miles (8983 square kilometers) sits on top of an active volcano, which gives rise to expansive hydrothermal areas that contain about half of the world’s active geysers. The bulk of the park, including Yellowstone Lake, sits in the U.S. state of Wyoming but it also sprawls into portions of Idaho and Montana.

According to the National Park Service, Yellowstone is also one of the largest, nearly intact temperate-zone ecosystems on Earth, providing a home to a large variety of terrestrial, aquatic, and microbial life. This includes two threatened species—the Canadian lynx and the grizzly bear—as well as 67 species of mammals, 285 species of bird, 16 species of fish, seven aquatic invasive species, five species of amphibians, and six species of reptile. Yellowstone Lake holds the largest population of native, wild cutthroat trout in North America.
