Lake Wilkinkarra-MacKay sprawls as a gleaming patch of mineral crust across a tan desert background near the border of Western Australia and Northern Territories, Australia. Sitting in a region filled with ephemeral lakes that only exist when rains are heavy, Wilkinkarra-MacKay stands out for both its very thick salt-laden crust and its impressive size. It is the largest salt lake in Western Australia and the fourth-largest in Australia.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image of Lake Wilkinkarra-Mackay on April 29, 2026.
