The annual sea ice melt on Canada’s Hudson Bay was well underway in late June 2026. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image of the southwestern section of the Bay on June 24.
Hudson Bay’s ice covering follows a predictable cycle. In winter, when the Northern Hemisphere sea ice reaches its maximum extent each winter, ice also covers Hudson Bay. As temperatures warm in springtime, the Bay’s ice begins to melt. Ice retreat on Hudson Bay begins in May and ice is usually gone completely sometime in July.
