On July 12, 2026, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image of Ireland and the United Kingdom.
The two green islands seen in this image are Great Britain, the largest and eastern-most island, and Ireland. Great Britian is divided into Scotland (north), England, and Wales (in the west), all of which belong to the United Kingdom. The northern portion of the island of Ireland, Northern Ireland, also belongs to Great Britan. The country of Ireland spans about five-sixths of southern part of the island of Ireland.
Clouds covered most of Scotland when this image was captured, a typical state across the British Isles. A study in 2012 found that the probability of cloud-free skies on any given day over Great Britain is 21.3 percent, with a maximum probability of 33.3 percent seen in November and the lowest probability, 12.9 percent, occurring in March.
