A large blank of spectacular clouds spread across northeastern Australia on the morning of July 23, 2026. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) acquired this true-color image of Northern Territory and Queensland on that same day.
According to several media reports, temperatures in parts of the northeast took a wintery tumble, with notable heavy frost. Brisbane, in eastern Queensland (and out of this image) was enveloped in fog so thick that visibility dropped significantly, snarling traffic and causing flight cancellations in the morning.
Outside of morning fog and frost, weather reports highlighted cool temperatures and clear skies, with no precipitation, across most of Northern Territory and Queensland on July 23. These clouds, therefore, and almost certainly morning fog (low clouds). Morning fog is common in the region in winter and typically dissipates as the day warms.
