On July 21, 2026, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image of a portion of north-western Madagascar. The image captures portions of the Boeny, Betsiboka, and Melaky regions. Both Boeny (north) and Melaky (south) have coastlines along the Mozambique Channel while Betsiboka lies inland.
Tan and green sediment rings the coast, especially in the southern portion of this image. Sediment appears tan when it floats near the surface but as it sinks its reflectivity (and therefore its color) changes. The color first changes to green and then, when it sinks deeper, sediment can take on a blue tone.
